Thursday night the pinkies came out in full force to see Girli at Amsterdam Bar and Hall in St Paul, Minnesota. This is her second time touring the states with the first time being earlier this year.

I came across Girli completely due to Spotify playing ‘Hot Mess’ after listening to some songs by fellow British singer Suzi Wu sometime around the release of ‘Odd One Out’. The song hooked me instantly and I ordered a copy online as soon as I got home. Since that day she has climbed up to one of my top ten most listened to artiest according to Last.fm since joining back in 2005 and one of my top five since I started to listen to her in 2019.

DJ Sci-Fi got the crowd warmed up to what was an amazing night of dancing, and singing. Sci-Fi is an experimental hip-hop performer, producer, and DJ proudly hailing from the East Side of Saint Paul, Minnesota. She’s been making her name at events such as Bedtime Goose, For The Love Project, Deuces Up!, and the all trans and intersex festival, Gender Unbound.

Girli started the night started off with the 2020 single ‘Has Been’ and the crowd sang along to every word from that point on with the exceptions of one unreleased song. A few songs into the set Girli wanted it known that her shows are safe spaces and if anyone is being made uncomfortable to let someone know as she remembers what it was like to go to shows. For people not familiar with Girli she is very vocal on LGBTQ+ rights and sings about feminism, sexuality, queer culture, and mental health. She brought up that a lot of her songs are about her mental health and how writing and singing the with the fans is a kind of therapy.

Before playing ‘Matriarchy’, her most recent release, Girli talked about how one publication talked about how its a song about strong female bonds to which she said the song is about gay sex. One fan yelled out their just roommates and that got a good laugh from the crowd. A new unreleased song titled ‘Nothing Hurts Like A Girl’, a song Girli said is about her breakup of her first real gay relationship and how it has hit her harder than any breakup she ever had with a guy. The set was closed out with ‘Leter To My Ex’ but it didn’t take long for her to come back out for an encore with all the fans chanting Girli! Girli! and close the night out with ‘I Really F**ked It Up’ and her biggest hit ‘More Than a Friend’.

At the end of the night Girli took the time to take pictures, sign things, and chat with any and all fans. This was my second time seeing Girli in concert and it will not be my last.
