Monday night Philadelphia, Pennsylvania’s Japanese Breakfast brought their dream pop ‘The Melancholy Tour‘ to a packed Pageant. Oakland, California’s experimental pop musician SPELLING opened the show.
Japanese Breakfast is fronted by singer, guitarist and songwriter Michelle Zauner, along with Peter Bradley (guitar), Deven Craige (bass), Craig Hendrix (drums and keyboards), violinist Lauren Baba and saxophonist Adam Schatz and formed as a side project for Zauner when she was in the emo group Little Big League.
Zauner took the stage bathed in orange and yellow lights while wading through smoke holding a glowing lantern. She took a seat on the edge of a large clam shell that was positioned at the back of the stage and was flanked by Peter Bradley (guitar) and Deven Craige (bass) and started the night with ‘Here Is Someone’ off of the new album ‘For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women)‘. During the set Zauner brought up memories saying that some of Little Big League‘s best shows were in St. Louis and remembers playing at The Library befor performing a cover of ‘Boyish‘. Later in the set what looked like possible technical difficulties but in reality a way forthe band to transition had Zauner sitting atop a piano with a large neon glowing sign that read “Melancholy Inn.” The magical night was closed out with a four song encore of ‘Posing for Cars’, ‘Paprika’, ‘Be Sweet’, and ‘Diving Woman’.
