Friday night the Urge sold out The Pageant for their traditional day after Thanksgiving show. The Urge holiday show has become a tradition. I remember several Christmas Eve’s leaving a family members house early to go pick up friends and heading down to Mississippi Nights for some crazy Urge shows. Sometime after the band started to play shows at The pageant they were moved to the Friday after Thanksgiving, with exception over the handful of years that they were disband.
As soon as Playadors left the stage it only took seconds for fans to start chanting ‘Play that Mother Fucking Urge Shit’, a chant that goes back as far as I can remember from the first time that I saw them at Homegrown Festival 1997 out at what was at the time Riverport Amphitheater. The band opened with ‘Intro: The Boot Will Conquer the Sandal‘ off the 1993 live album Fat Babies in the Mix before hitting fans with another deep cut with ‘She Don’t Care‘ off 1990’s Puttin’ the Backbone Back. Its always nice when the band pulls out songs that they don’t play often like ‘She Don’t Care’, ‘Frying Pan’, Played Out’, and ‘Dirty Rat‘ along with songs that have an almost permeant spot in their setlist like ‘All Washed Up, ‘Open All Night’, ‘Jump Right In’, and ‘Brainless’. The regular set ended with Jerry Jost’s searing guitar intro of ‘Brainless‘ that had the place erupt. The band left the stage briefly after ‘Brainless’ and it took no time what so ever for the fans to start chanting ‘Play that Mother Fucking Urge Shit’. The band kicked off the encore with the 2017 single ‘How Does It Feel‘, ‘Dirty Rat‘, a cover of ‘Walking On the Moon‘ by The Police, and closed the night with their cover of The Brand New Heavies ‘It’s Getting Hectic’ , which always gets the fans to go crazy. Even after all these years Steve and company put on a high energy show that cant be missed.
