Thursday night Nashville power trio The Foxies kicked off their two month tour at Red Flag in St. Louis, MO along with Atlanta alternative band Glimmers, and two local bands Augmented Hearts, and Gavin O’ Brien.
The show was presented by Beyond FM, an online radio station that started as a weekly podcast to support the St. Louis local original music scene and has now grown to an online radio station that plays nothing but St. louis area artists 24/7 and does live interviews and book shows with local and national artists.
I came across The Foxies thanks to Spotify as I was on my way back from Chicago after seeing Girli with tiLLie opening for her and was listening to a lot of their stuff and then ‘Anti Socialite’ came on and I had to check out some more from the band. the band consists ofvocalist Julia Lauren Bullock, guitarist Jake Ohlbaum, and drummer Rob Bodley. The bands sound is a mixture of punk, glam, disco, and modern pop. The band called their sound “Goth Disco” or “Glitter Punk”. I have seen a few people say that frontwoman Julia Lauren Bullock is like a mix of Debbie Harry and Miley Cyrus. I would add a bit of No Doubt era Gwen Stefani having seen No Doubt live twice. The Foxies even play a bit of ‘I’m Just A Girl‘ during ‘Know Better‘.
The band opened with ‘Summer Never Dies‘ followed by “Anti-Socialite’. At one point during the show a fan yelled out something about Creed to which Bullock briefly sang “can you take me higher’ in her best Scott Stapp vocals (back while recording the 2022 album Who Are You Now, Who Were You Then they ran into Scott Stapp while doing recording sessions at Quad Studios). Before playing ‘Crushed Velvet‘ Bullock told the crowd that they don’t play it often but think that everyone needs to be vulnerable sometimes. After that the band got the crowd and the band members dancing for the ‘Little Monsters‘. Near the end of the set Bullock asked the crowd what time it was and it was a little before 11pm. She told the crowd that in around 10 minutes their new song ‘Natural Disaster‘ would be dropping. She joked that she wish’s they had some Natty Light for the song. The band closed the show with ‘Screws‘. Up next for the band is a slot at Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Manchester, Tennessee on June 13th. The band will also be opening for Cassadee Pope through the end of July. If you get the chance to catch them live do so.
