Sunday night Girli brought her Matriarchy Tour to Lincoln Hall in Chicago. This was her third stop on a six show tour and her second time playing Chicago in less than a year. Girli even adressed that she had so much fun last time she played in Chicago (at The Empty Bottle) and how feral the crowd was.
I came across Girli completely due to Spotify playing ‘Hot Mess’ after listening to some songs by fellow British singer Suzi Wu sometime around the release of her album ‘Odd One Out’.
First up was tiLLie. tiLLie self categorizes her music as “Nightmare Pop”. This was the third time seeing her live. I caught her on her first tour back in 2017 when she was on Vans Warped Tour and then again a couple years ago when she opened for Lights. Stand out songs from her eight song set were ‘jeLLiefish aPocaLypsE’, a song about jellyfish taking over the world, and ‘kooL aiD mAn‘, a song about having the Kool Aid Man taking care of someone that has been putting people that she cares for through hell.
Once Girli took the stage it was nonstop energy and singalongs. Kicking things off with ‘Nothing Hurts Like A Girl‘, the first of six songs off her upcoming album ‘Matriarchy‘. Girli told the crowd that the reason that she chose ‘Matriarchy’ for the title of her upcoming new album was not to say that women were better than men, but that she was tired of seeing how women and LGBTQ+ people get treated in the music industry as it is mostly run by men. That is part of the reason that she has decided to have an all women crew on her tours. Along on this tour Girli brought Faber, a singer-songwriter from South London who has done backup vocals on Girli’s last two tours in North America and for the first time drummer Chloe Arnow. For people not familiar with Girli she is very vocal on LGBTQ+ rights and sings about feminism, sexuality, queer culture, and mental health, and that all her shows are safe spaces.
When Girli came back on stage she talked about how when she originally released ‘More Than A Friend‘ she had a few comments like “Slay” and then nothing for like six months. Then all the thirsty gays came out and the song blew up to be her most streamed song she has put out to date. She said that its also the part of her show that she encourages her fans that might have feelings for a friend to maybe let them know. The show was closed out with ‘Matriarchy‘.
