Monday night was transformed into another world as Melanie Martinez brought her Portals tour to St. Louis Music Park. Portals is the third album by Martinez and was released back in March. The album sees an end to the ‘Crybaby’ persona the birth of an otherworldly faerie type creature. You could see throughout the sold out show several fans with wings and or pointed ears and costumes.
The Portals tour is a bit different than your average tour in that none of Martinez’s earlier songs are being played and that she is playing the new album from start to finish and then the encore is the three songs that were added to the deluxe edition. They also have photographers covering the shows shoot in three song blocks that are different from the previous night so fans can see the full range of the shows production and not just the first three like most concerts. The stage looks like a cross between a psychedelic Ferngully and Alice in Wonderland and transforms a bit with each song with large mushrooms for ‘Faerie Soirée’, a large spiderweb during ‘Spider Web’ a large moon passing over a red river on the large screen at the back of the stage for ‘Moon Cycle’ just to name a few. As soon as the lights went down the crowd started to chant ‘Melanie’. Opening with ‘Death’ and “The Void’, two songs that capture the transformation of the end of Crybaby and the beginning of something new. Throughout the night Martinez would hold her mic out to the crowd and the crowd would sing along to every word.
Opening act for the night was San Francisco based singer-songwriter Tanukichan.
