Wednesday night Canadian twin sister duo Tegan and Sara played The Pageant on their Crybaby tour.
Singer/songwriter Carlie Hanson opened the night. The 23 year old Wisconsin born singer had a new album called Wisconsin come out in March and played an acoustic set. During her set she said that she thinks it is the first time playing St. Louis but she could be wrong as she has smoked a lot of pot so was not sure. After her set I had a laugh with a fellow photographer seeing as a band that was recently in town had said that it was their first time in St. Louis but in reality they had been here ten months prior to that show.
Kicking things off with ‘You Wouldn’t Like Me’ from their 2004 release ‘So Jealous’, it’s also the album that got my attention, but seriously how is this album almost 20 years old as it does not feel like it has been that long.
The sisters are known to engage in onstage banter, including stories about their childhood, politics, and life on tour. Wednesday night had several of these moments. After finishing up ‘The Con’ Sara addressed the crowd saying that it has been a while since they have been in St. Louis but she has memories about this venue and street. While they were on tour for Sainthood they were in Memphis on April 1st and decided to pull a prank on their tour manager and called him saying that they had been arrested for being drunk and disorderly and it didn’t go over well. Tegan jumps in and says she says she has fond memories about St. Louis but here she is talking about Memphis to which Sara says that she is getting there. The next day she remembers walking on Delmar hungover thinking that it was not the best idea. She finished with that was some of the things that we did when we were young rascals and now were old ladies in our 40s that have seen some stuff.
Tegan also had a tour story about how when they were teenagers on their first tour in Europe and that their mom was 42 and the same age as they are now. They were in Milan and their record lable had left them 40 dollars American. They were starving and went to McDonalds and pushed a 20 dollar bill across the counter and they pushed it back saying no. Seeing as this was before the internet they didn’t know anything about going to a money exchange and the whole tour ended up like this with each country having different currencies seeing as this was also pre Euro.
A few older songs were played ‘My Number’ off This Business of Art and ‘Living Room’ from If It Was You. They said they don’t play that many songs from that time period as they were different people then and its almost like they are playing a cover song even though it is their own songs.

Got something to say? Go for it!
